Worship of the Virgin of Carmen of Mamacha Carmen, patron saint of the mestizos, is expressed with colourful images during the procession of the image through the streets of the town, accompanied by music, choirs that sing in Quechua and carnival groups that represent passages from Peru’s history. On the maing day, the Virgin blesses the attendants and drives out demons, who perform risky pirouettes over the rooftops. The festival ends with a war against demons, in which the faithful emerge triumphant. Location: Paucartambo (2,906 masl), 150 km from Cusco. Access: from Cusco to Paucartambo (via San Salvador and Huancarani) takes 4 hours.
